CFL Bulbs and Savings
My friend and business partner, Thomas Carlson, and I were catching up after a week or so of intense work. It was just a friendly chat that made me smile when he said “I lowered my electric bill by $100!”
I was of course extremely curious because $100 a month is quite a savings. So I asked what he did and I was surprised at his reply. “I replaced all my old light bulbs with CFL bulbs.”
My parents had changed to these bulbs a few years ago but hadn’t said anything about that kind of savings. Of course, it may be that they changed theirs out gradually.
He explained that he used the 75 watt bulbs and had gotten them for quite a deal as they used to be very expensive. Now he was finding them on sale for about half what they used to be. He also told me the CFL bulb only used 15% of the energy a regular bulb used.
This was of great interest to me as the CFL bulb would deplete my solar battery banks much more slowly and allow for other appliances to be used for longer if needed. I really only worry about this when the sun has been hiding for days. There is plenty of battery power and with a solar generator there is even more. I just don’t want to waste any energy I don’t have to. It’s simple, the old saying “waste not, want not” is true in this case.
